For the record: nope, I'm not in the line. Which is a shame, really, as you should see the plans I have for the White House.
Two words: Thunder. Dome.
(Yes, I know that's one word. But it's more dramatic this way).
WASHINGTON - The Senate approved a bill Tuesday to raise the homeland security secretary from last to eighth place in the presidential line of succession, just after the attorney general.
The bill, sponsored by Sen. Mike DeWine (news, bio, voting record), R-Ohio, passed without objection just before the chamber adjourned. The companion House bill, sponsored by Rep. Tom Davis, R-Va., is pending before the Judiciary and Government Reform committees.
Ya know, checking out the line of succession, I'm still somewhat bemused that the Secretary of Defense isn't higher-- at the very least, right after the Speaker and President Pro Tempore.
After all, if something so horrible happened that resulted in the demise of the President, the Vice President, the Speaker of the House, *and* the President P.T., all at once, don't you think that there might be some need at that point for a "war" president? Condi's nice and all, but the prospect of a President John Snow doesn't exactly inspire confidence.
I dunno about you, but I feel that if we got that far down the line, I'd want Rummy with the football open and a bit electric map in front of him. Maybe a bottle of Jim Beam too, for good measure.
